Flagscanner began in 2008 with just a single online scanner. Its beginning purpose was just to provide scanner feeds for Flagstaff. We wanted to showcase the dangerous and selfless jobs that our police, fire and EMS officials perform on a daily basis. Over the years, Flagscanner grew to be more than that. In 2010, Flagscanner faced a turning point. During the Shultz Fire of 2010, we began sending fire information via Twitter, due to a growing number of concerned citizens not getting timely information about the fire's containment lines. Flagscanner followers also asked for us to set up a Facebook page with updates, and so we did. Due to the overwhelming amount of support from the community through donations, in 2011 we added three additional scanners, bringing our total online feed count to five: Fire, Police, Sheriff, DPS, and NAU PD. By the end of 2011, Flagscanner.com surpassed 2 million unique website hits. Our Twitter and Facebook followers number in the THOUSANDS. Over 50 thousand people have connected to our online streams. In 2012 we launched our video reporting service because we saw a need for video news in the Northern Arizona region, since the closure of Channel 2 News. We were fortunate to have Christina Batson from the NAU Media Studies department join the ranks of Flagscanner as its lead reporter. She continues to provide breaking news coverage for not only Flagscanner, but for media organizations nationwide. At Flagscanner we believe that an informed public is a safer public. This site is dedicated to the men and women in the law enforcement, fire and medical fields in and around Northern Arizona.
